If you receive a minor traffic violation in Hopkins County, you may be eligible for a deferral or dismissal. This service is to assist defendants by filing motions prior to the court date in order to avoid having to miss work and/or school.
What is a DEFERRAL?
A deferral is a ONE TIME courtesy granted by Hopkins County Attorney, Todd P’Pool, for minor traffic violations received in Hopkins County. Instead of pleading guilty to the violation you are given probation, or a “deferral.” This means the charge is held for a specific period of time (up to one year), if no other violations are received during that time, the charge will be dismissed. This courtesy keeps defendants from having to appear in court, and/or paying fines and court costs. If any other violation is received during that specific period of time, the defendant will be responsible to pay both citations.
What is a DISMISSAL?
A motion for dismissal is made on behalf of a defendant that is charged with any minor traffic violation received in Hopkins County, which can be cleared up with proof. Such as not having your license, expired registration, or not having an insurance card in your vehicle. There is no probationary period with this service and the charge is immediately dismissed upon the Judges signature.
To request a deferral or dismissal, you will need to bring and/or fax your citation and provide the necessary proof to the Hopkins County Attorney’s office:
